Select League

West Linn Select Baseball is the most competitive level of baseball offered at each Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth age group from 10U through 14U. 

It is designed to ensure the players who demonstrate skill sets needed for this level of baseball at each age group are selected through a tryout process operated by the WLBA select committee and the West Linn High School staff.  Skill sets assessed are any individual baseball activity such as batting, throwing, catching, base running, and fielding as well as combination baseball skills such as reading and reacting to baseball situations, on-field attitude, and hustle. 

Tryouts are in early fall and once teams are selected each team will have a fall, winter, and spring schedule to be determined by the coaching staff.  All teams will be scheduled in 8-10 local and regional tournaments as well as intermittent weekday games to be scheduled by each coaching staff.

The age groups for this level of baseball are Cal Ripken 10U, 11U, 12U and Babe Ruth 13U, 14U as directed by Babe Ruth baseball age rules.

  • The 10U age group plays on a Cal Ripken field size as directed by Babe Ruth of  46' pitching distance, 60' base paths and is non leadoff.  The 10U age level tournament path as directed by Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth is the 10U Northern Oregon state tournament, then the 10U Pacific Northwest Cal Ripken regional, and then 10U Cal Ripken World Series if qualified. 
  • The 11U age group* plays on a Cal Ripken field size as directed by Babe Ruth of a 50' pitching distance, 70' base paths and is lead off baseball.  The 11U age level tournament path as directed by Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth in the 11U Northern Oregon state tournament, then the 11U Pacific Northwest Cal Ripken regional at which point the season is completed.  If Babe Ruth offers an invite national tournament, the team can apply for entry to that year's tournament.   WLBA does not accept any automatic bids to the following year's 12U tournament in this scenario. 
  • The 12U age group plays on a Cal Ripken field size as directed by Babe Ruth of  50' pitching distance, 70' base paths and is lead off baseball.  The 12U age level tournament path as directed by Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth in the 12U Northern Oregon state tournament, then the 12U Pacific Northwest Cal Ripken regional, then the 12U Cal Ripken World Series if qualified. 
  • The 13U age group plays on a Babe Ruth field size as directed by Babe Ruth of 60' 6'pitching distance, 90' base paths and is lead off baseball.  The 13U age level tournament path as directed by Babe Ruth is the 13U Northern Oregon state tournament, then the 13U Pacific Northwest Babe Ruth regional, then the 13U Babe Ruth World Series if qualified. 
  • The 14U age group plays on a Babe Ruth field size as directed by Babe Ruth of  60'6' pitching distance, 90' base paths, and is lead off baseball.  The 14U age level tournament path as directed by Babe Ruth is the 14U Northern Oregon state tournament, then the 14U Pacific Northwest Babe Ruth regional, then the 14U Babe Ruth World Series if qualified.
